Jon Sueda
Just wrapped up a great interview with Jon Sueda
of Stripe SF. Jon walked me through a bunch of his
work from the last several years (some of which
is pictured below along with my notes).
We also
talked about Task a journal he edits with Emmet
Byrne and Alex DeArmond. I encourage everyone to
pick up a copy.

Jens Risom
I'm thrilled to see my profile of Jens Risom in
the September 2009 issue of Dwell. You can check
out the article in the "selected writings" section
of my site (at left). Below is a card Risom sent
after we met last fall. It is a rendering of Risom
from the 1963 furniture fair in Copenhagen by
Hans Bendix.

ReadyMade
I visited Denyse Schmidt's workshop for ReadyMade
this past week and got to try my hand at quilting.
I think I need to buy a sewing machine! Below are
a few shots of Denyse's latest collection (works-
in-progress) for Ralph Pucci International.
Incidentally, Ralph Pucci also sells Jens Risom's
work (see above)!

Kees Goudzwaard
I was recently introduced to Kees Goudzwaard's work
via Roger Willems's website.

Bates Masi
David Adjaye
I was happy to see my most recent article in the
current issue of Dwell. I went to visit this project
in Long Island over the summer and totally fell for it.
Bates Masi was re-hired for the renovation of Harry
Bates's original 1967 design. You can check out the
entire article on the redesigned Dwell.com (which
looks great!).
I'll admit I'm a sucker for weathered wooden boxes;
David Adjaye's "Ed's Shed" was one of my favorite
projects Dwell (and nytimes) featured last year.

And speaking of Adjaye, his recent Kvadrat Showroom
collaboration with the graphic designer Peter Saville
is really beautiful. Thanks to Dezeen for the nice
article and photos.

Yuko Nasu
I read about Yuko Nasu's portrait of "Kate Moss"
(not pictured here, obviously) and wanted to check
out some more of her work. I would love to be able
to see the show, "John Doe: Imagined portraits of
unknown people," in person.

Gärtens
I came across these garden installations by two
German Landscape Architecture firms while doing
research for an article. I found them both to be
quite lovely. The first, Garten Babel is by Klahn
+ Singer + Partner. It was an installation for
the Schloss Ippenburg Garden festival in 2000, and,
as my middling comprehension of german tells me,
this Brueghel painting was the inspiration.

The second is a temporary installation by Relais
Landschaftsarchitekten that showed in Berlin in 1999.
Both make me long for a late nineties I never knew.

Transcribing Karel Martens interview.

"I am educated as a fine artist, more or less,
with a class one day a week focused on “publicity.”
The class was taught by a painter, and I’m really
happy that it was that way because it gave me a
broader experience. Now design education is about
design, design, design — Quark,InDesign, Illustrator
— and that’s a danger. All the students have books
about design, but I believe it’s better to be fed by
society and other disciplines." —KM
